Barber Hacks: In Case Of Emergencies

Barberhacks is here to help you sort out how to barber better, and more intelligently, through the gaze of a guy working 16 years in the hair industry.

EMERGENCIES

It has been a couple weeks since I’ve written a blog and it has been a very busy couple of weeks for me. My father had a massive heart attack, a 7 out of 10, or so the doctors have told me, one that could have killed him.

Through luck and an amazing health care system in Canada, he has survived, although he is recovering from open heart surgery, a quadruple bypass.

I took a week off of work to be with him during this time, and it was a stressful and trying time for me, I am still recovering from the amount of stress that I put my body through.

What does this have to do with barbering?

To me, it points out something important that every barber should be aware of, the fact that you are only making money as long as you are behind the chair, or at least if barbering is your only gig, and you aren’t a barbershop owner.

MONEY MANAGEMENT ADVICE

I don’t own a barbershop, I have made some poor money management decisions in my life, and I have just surfaced from a somewhat major amount of debt that I have had for the last 7 years.

So perhaps you don’t want to be taking financial advice from me, or perhaps you do. I have paid off my debt, and after this year of taxes will be working completely in the black.

Add to that, I’ve shifted how I look at money lately, and am looking to play this game with my head above water for the first time in my life. I’ve made my money mistakes, and I want to pass some advice on to others.

CONTRACTORS

So, to those of you that are contractors, here is a piece of advice that I want to pass along to you; before you buy a car, before you invest in a piece of property, quietly tuck away 3 to 6 months of your wages as an emergency fund.

Don’t invest this money, just keep it in a simple savings account that allow you to keep the money as available as possible.

THE REASON WHY?

Well, your father may have a heart attack, and you may want to spend some time with him during his stay at the hospital.

Your employer might run the business into the ground, leaving you without a job.

You might injure your hands in a bar fight, or while playing sports, or during some other ridiculous accident.

The last thing that you want to do is to be without during a time of duress and stress. Make this fund a priority, setup your budget to include it, and know that when you go through a hard time that you will have the ability to take care of your people and yourself.

IN CONCLUSION

Quite simply, put aside 3 months of your wages and sleep soundly knowing that you have your own back during hard times.

Wishing you and yours a healthy happy week,

Until next week (barring any emergencies),

Barber Hacks: 10 Monumental Tips That Will Change How You Barber

Barberhacks is an online resource for barbers to help them improve in every aspect of the business. Disorganized Chaos I don’t know how I used to do it when I was younger, I’ve gotten to the point in my career where that is pretty far removed from the present. Like a lot of barbers I’m mostly self-taught, meaning there was little structure in the way that I approached cutting hair. I have always had a disorganized chaos going on on my station while I am cutting, I’ll casually toss guards onto the countertop as I progress into my cuts. I’ll grab scissors and place them haphazardly about. I’m getting the job done, so it doesn’t matter what happens while I’m doing it, does it? This is not to say that I have been a complete mess in my past, just unorganized as I cut. Because who notices the little points like that? In Barbershops, the customer is looking the other way, aren’t they? I’ve started to break down my routine recently, especially when it comes to my service, my clea

Thank you.r I’ve had barbers tell me that the outline of a haircut is the most important part or the haircut, and there are moments when I agree with that. A lineup is often the part of the haircut that we notice first with fades. When it comes to this technique, the solid lines define our canvases. If you are going to be fading on a regular basis, knowing your trimmer and how to maintain it is key to a great haircut. Trimmers are baffling to some barbers and stylists. I read comments on Instagram daily that say, “How do you get your trimmers to hit like that?” I understand complet
